I'm probably not the best source for strategy (since I'm still a beginner moving to intermediate)   But  to me a good strategy starts with a short, low serve that forces your opponent to lift. 

You hope for an easy mid-court lift that you return with a hard smash.   If the return lift goes real deep, that's when you need to return with a good powerful clear that forces your opponent deep into the back of their court.  Or use a drop shot and send  them running for the net.  Also on either  your clear or your drop shot, send the bird to the opposite side of where your opponent is standing.  This way you've got them on run.
