It can be tough to get kids like middle schoolers focused on developing badminton skills.   Left to their own, racquets tend to turn into swords.

But today the kids at Beaumont invented a new game and I think its called "Take out the trash."  works like this.  Your side of court is your bedroom or whatever you want it to be.  And your opponent's side is also their bedroom or whatever they like. 

Now you need a postal tub full of old birds.  One player has the birds on their side and they serve to the other side.  A volley happens and the goal is to simply make the other kid miss a return shot.  When they do, that bird stays on the floor and in essence you are filling their room with "trash".  The more trash you land in your opponents court the more trash they have to take out, i.e. pick them up and put back in the tub.  The winner is the one with least amount of birds on the floor after the tub is emptied.

 The kids seem to like it and it makes them get really competitive and volley harder trying to fill up their opponents bedroom with trash.  And this game works well with as few as just 2 kids.

Another great game I learned at a coaching seminar works well with lots of kids,  ideally 6 or eight on each side of the net.  Kids hold their spot on the court and don't move too much out of their area.  A volley gets going and if you swing and miss, you have to drop to your knees, miss again and now you sit on the court, miss again and your lying on your back, miss again and you lie on your stomach.  From each postion you are still trying to return shots if they come into your range

 The way to redeem yourself is to successfully return a shot.  For example if you were sitting on the court and returned a shot, you get to switch to on your knees, hit it again and your back on your feet.   It really is a prety fun game I had a great time playing it with adults.  Kids seem to have a great time with it and usually very funny stuff happens.  There's no scoring to it just play it for a set time.
